A Dead Eagle, a Post Office, and a New Name
Eagleville was settled in 1790, when pioneers Absalom and Nancy Scales built the area's original two-story poplar-log home; the community was first called Manchester. When its post office opened in 1836, the name changed to Eagleville -- local legend says a large eagle was found dead in the surrounding hills. The town incorporated in 1949 under Governor Gordon Browning, and its documented community history through the 1870s and 1880s includes Eagleville Baptist Church and a two-story school built in 1915 that was rebuilt after a 1923 fire.
