Named for a Postmaster's Friend on the Day He Died
La Vergne's first settlement, called Buchananville after Samuel and John Buchanan, took shape in the late 1700s near the Stones River and Hurricane Creek. It was later known as Mountain View before the postmaster renamed it La Vergne on August 23, 1852, honoring his friend Francois Lenard Gregoire de Roulhac de La Vergne, who had championed a local post office and died that same day. The town's original 1860 incorporation lapsed in 1881 after the Civil War left it without enough elected officials to function, and it wasn't re-incorporated until February 29, 1972.
I-24-Corridor Clay Under Rapid Growth
La Vergne's older core traces back to its nineteenth-century founding, but most of its housing stock reflects the rapid growth the I-24 corridor between Nashville and Murfreesboro has brought over recent decades. That growth has outpaced the age of the underlying ground, which is still the same shrink-swell clay found across Rutherford County regardless of how recently a subdivision went in.
